Get to know our latest addition to the team - Arif Jiwany...

Our team is continuously growing at UKIM Occupational Health & Wellbeing, and we're delighted to introduce the latest addition to our clinical experts, Occupational Health Physician Arif Jiwany...

Over to Arif!

"I trained in medicine after working as a residential social worker for a few years and back-packing around the world. The course in those days was very traditional, lots of facts to memorise to pass exams, that were then quickly forgotten!

"On qualifying, I quickly realised that medical school had given me the scientific knowledge that underpins modern medicine, however it really had not taught me how to be a good clinician and understanding how to apply the ‘art’ in medicine.

"I completed a 3-year post-graduate training scheme in NHS General Practice in inner city London and on completion, I worked as a full-time GP for 3 years in some of the most socio-economically deprived areas of London.

"Although I knew little about Occupational Medicine, apart from my personal experience as a junior doctor, I applied for a role at Shell that looked interesting and although I lacked experience, somehow, I was recruited. As a result, my career in Occupational Medicine was launched and while working, I also completed my post-graduate training to become a specialist.

"Since then, I have worked in cancer research, and I also kept my NHS GP career going on a part-time basis until 2017.  My last role before joining UKIM Occupational Health & Wellbeing, was as a Global Head of Occupational Health & Wellbeing."

Joining UKIM:

"At UKIM, I work as an Occupational Health Physician; the work entails advising employers and workers on all aspects of the health impacts of work upon the worker, as well as how health issues affecting the worker can impact upon their ability to work.

"It is an opportunity for me to go ‘back to the basics’ and also have better work-life balance. I now work 3 days a week and have less responsibility (which is bliss!). Furthermore, my background and experience mean I can contribute to improving current systems and processes to support the OH business which has seen incredible growth in the past few years."

A fun fact...

"I have completed 3 marathons, London, New York and Paris, raising about 10K for several charities. Although no more are planned… ‘never say never!’"
